COUPLES COUSELOR
My boyfriend and I have been arguing all week. At the moment we've been bickering about how to file for bankruptcy. I think we've probably reached our lowest point. We actually have a meeting scheduled with a couple's counselor next week. Believe it or not, it was his idea. At first I was really resistant to the whole thing. The idea that our relationship got to the point where we needed counseling didn't sit well with me at all. I've had some time to reflect on our relationship over the last several weeks, though, and, in retrospect, I can see that it's probably something we need. Now isn't the time to fall apart on each other. I actually think if we're able to file for bankruptcy that will help us make a fresh start. We've really matured a lot since accumulating all those debts. We were young and naïve about a lot of financial matters. Even before we met each other, we had financial problems that we never addressed. I think the bankruptcy will be the final straw for both of us. We eventually want a house of our own some day. We want to save for a wedding. We have a bunch of other similar goals that we now realize need to be the priority. Even though the bankruptcy isn't what either of us ever thought we'd be doing, I think it's the wake-up call we needed.
